PROJECT AMIHAN:

Young Peace Weavers

Project Amihan aims to weave peace through friendship by celebrating and nurturing the connections that unite people. It is designed to bridge cultural divides and foster meaningful friendships among diverse communities in the Philippines, particularly in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, and Lanao del Sur in Mindanao region. Amidst the rich tapestry of cultural diversity, the project seeks to highlight the transformative power of friendship in building peace and mutual understanding among people from different backgrounds.


It is supported and funded by the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) of the U.S. State Department and the Kenan Foundation.

OUR ACTIVITIES

Digital Storytelling Workshop: Friendship as tool for Peace

20 youth participants (10 pairs that became friends despite different backgrounds) living in Iligan City, Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte were involved in storytelling workshops and sessions, and content creation activities. These participants gained understanding on culture of peace and valuable skills in digital media, storytelling, and intercultural understanding that will empower them to become ambassadors for peace and unity in their communities and truly become young peace weavers.'s.

Friendship as a tool for Peace Webinar

This webinar will provide valuable insights into the importance of fostering friendships across diverse backgrounds and promoting cultural awareness. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from experts in peacebuilding and intercultural dialogue and gain valuable knowledge and skills that they can apply in their own communities. Through this webinar, the project aims to inspire and empower youth from different parts of the country to become agents of positive change and advocates for peace and understanding. They will also learn about culture of peace, media literacy, cybersecurity awareness, positive social media usage, and digital media production for promoting peace and countering misinformation and hate speech aimed at different ethnic groups.

Online Contest

Participants will create minute-long videos for Facebook (Reel) and TikTok and showcase their friendships and spread messages of diversity and tolerance. Additionally, for selfie/groufie contests (Facebook and Instagram), they will take photos with their friends and write a story of their friendship to highlight the importance of cross-cultural connections and friendships. Through these contests, participants will gain valuable experience in using digital media for peacebuilding while fostering a culture of understanding and acceptance. 's.

Online Friendship and Peace Festival

This is a digital event dedicated to celebrating the power of friendship and its role in fostering peace across diverse communities. Designed as a virtual gathering, the festival will bring together individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, and regions to connect, share stories, and engage in meaningful dialogue.'s.

[FRIENDSHIP STORY] Finding common ground through friendship

Sharif, a Tausug, and Jam, a Maranao, first met during their media coverage at the 6th Organic Asia Congress in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte. Sharif works with Presidential Broadcast Service - Bureau of Broadcast Services, and Jam was an intern at the Philippine Information Agency. Despite their different tribal backgrounds, they discovered common ground through their mutual interests and collaborative work. During the first day of the Digital Storytelling Workshop: Friendship as a Tool for Peace, participants engaged in interactive activities. They introduced themselves in pairs and shared how they met their friends, what they admire about them, and how they find common ground despite their differences.
